Through the 1960s, Ray Mills, his grandfather, represented Western Australia while playing Australian rules football for the Perth Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). When he was four years old, he started playing Australian rules football through the Auskick junior program. However, he gave up the sport when he was seven to play rugby union with his schoolmates.

Together with Brad Parker and Simon Kennewell, he was a member of the Warringah Rugby Club’s junior representative team, which won three straight state championships from 2008–2010.

In 2010, when Mills was 13 years old, the then-Sydney Swans chairman Andrew Pridham asked her to step in for the Mosman Swans junior Australian rules football team.

He took up rugby union after making an impression enough to be accepted into the Sydney Swans talent academy later that year.

Later, Mills acknowledged that the Swans academy significantly impacted his choice to play Australian rules football as a teenager as opposed to rugby union.

He represented the Mosman Swans in the under-16 best and fairest competition at the age of fourteen, and in 2012, he was named club champion.
